Albany officials, Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful collected trash and litter on Friday

ALBANY — City officials and volunteers in pairs and groups walked across downtown Albany on Friday morning to kick off the Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful weekend event that the city holds annually on the third Saturday of every April. Albany city employees, local government officials, and Albany and Dougherty County police officers gathered to pick up trash and advance litter awareness.
More than 2,000 Albany citizens are expected to cover more than 100 miles of roads in Dougherty County as parts of 84 teams.
The city officials and employees kick-started the weekend Friday to set an example for the rest of the community.
“How our community looks reflects the people who live here,” Judy Bowles, the director of Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful, said.
Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful is an anti-littering campaign that promotes responsibility with trash and recycling.
By the end of the Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful trash collection on Friday morning, a large pile of more than 30 bags of litter, collected downtown by the volunteers, was ready to be removed from the Albany Plaza next to the Government Center water fountain.
