ALBANY — City Manager Sharon Subadan’s office has released information on a “major spill” of wastewater that flowed into the Percosin drainage canal in the 1300 block of Westwood Drive in southwest Albany Saturday.

The spill was discovered at approximately 1:15 p.m. Saturday, and officials say it was caused by a blockage in a city sewer main. Subadan’s office said approximately 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into the Percosin canal between 1:15 and 6:40 p.m. before the blockage was cleared.

“Crews from Albany Utility were on the scene quickly and began to assess the situation,” the release issued late Tuesday said. “The sewer blockage was cleared as soon as feasible due to the wet conditions.”

As required by the city’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit, staff collected water quality samples upstream and downstream of the Percosin canal for analysis. City officials also provided the appropriate notification to the Environmental Health Department. Public notices were posted at the location.

Citizens are advised to avoid contact with water in the Percosin canal and downstream of the canal for the next 30 days.
