ALBANY —Albany police have identified a bicyclist who was seriously injured in a hit-and-run wreck late Saturday.

Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, said the cyclist is William Bays, but law enforcement officials have no other details.

“We are waiting on additional information such as age and where he lives, and anything we can find out regarding his condition,” Banks said in an email this morning. “Mr. Bays did not have identification on him at the time of the incident. “

On Sunday morning, Banks said a bicyclist, described only as a white male, was injured Saturday evening in the hit-and-run wreck, which witnesses said occurred when a car ran a red light and struck him at Pine Avenue and Jefferson Street. The incident was reported at 7:49 p.m.

According to the APD report, a car, described as a white compact, was traveling north of Jefferson and may have been attempting to turn left onto Pine when witnesses say its ran the red light and hit the bicyclist. The rider “sustained serious injuries and was transported for treatment by Dougherty County EMS,” Banks said Sunday.
