ALBANY — The Albany Police Department is investigating the circumstances of a car wreck that took place Thursday evening in which one of the drivers left the scene in a nearby vehicle.
A spokeswoman for APD said in a news release that the incident took place at the intersection of Mitchell Avenue and South Street at 10:28 p.m. on Thursday.
The release said the APD Traffic Unit responded to Mitchell Avenue at South Street for a hit-and-run crash. A 2008 Dodge Avenger was traveling north on South Street toward Mitchell. A 2018 Nissan Altima driven by Anthony Eafford, 46, was traveling east on Mitchell, approaching South Street. Eafford stated that the other vehicle ran the stop sign, and the two cars collided.
Police said the Avenger continued traveling north, struck a street and stop sign pole and a chain link fence at 306 Mitchell Ave. prior to coming to rest on the curb. Eafford’s vehicle spun clockwise and came to rest along the north curb. A third vehicle was behind the Avenger, and the driver of the third car stopped briefly and allowed the driver of the Avenger to get inside before leaving the scene.
Eafford was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after complaints of injuries, and the Avenger was reported stolen after the crash occurred. The incident remains under investigation, police said.
