ALBANY — The Albany Police Department’s Traffic Unit reported a pair of fatalities after responding to a two-car accident on Tuesday and a pedestrian accident on Wednesday.

Micah Haynes, 24, sustained fatal injuries in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of North Westover Boulevard and Gillionville Road Tuesday, and pedestrian Russell Fackler, 28, was killed Wednesday when he was struck by a vehicle on the Liberty Expressway.

At approximately 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, a silver 2002 Volkswagen Passat and a white 2011 Ford F750 — a city of Albany vehicle — collided at the intersection of North Westover Boulevard and Gillionville Road. Early the following morning, a pedestrian was struck on the 700 block of the Liberty Expressway.

Albany police say Micah Haynes and Randal Haynes, 60, were the driver and passenger, respectively, of the Volkswagen Passat. Lorenzo Reese, 46, drove the Ford F750, with Jarvis Ellis, 37, and Shontrio West, 31, as passengers.

All of the drivers and passengers were transported to the local hospital for treatment. Haynes sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The three city employees were treated and released.

The Traffic Unit’s preliminary investigation revealed the Passat was traveling north on South Westover Boulevard. The F750 was traveling south on North Westover Boulevard and approached the intersection at Gillionville Road in the right-hand lane. When the Passat turned left into the truck’s path, the two vehicles collided.

Witnesses say they observed solid green lights on the traffic signals before the accident. At this time, the Traffic Unit is investigating the accident and charges are pending.

At 12:47 a.m. on Wednesday, Joel White Jr., 31, was traveling north on North Slappey Boulevard and entered the Liberty Expressway entrance ramp eastbound. Fackler, who police say had consumed some type of alcoholic beverage, reportedly walked into the path of the yellow 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by White. Fackler sustained fatal injuries, while White sustained no injuries.

Anyone with information related to the incidents is asked to contact the Albany Police Department at (229) 431-2100.
