ALBANY — An Albany solid waste employee seriously injured by a garbage truck Monday afternoon has been transferred to a hospital in Macon, officials said.

Phyllis Banks, a spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, said that Keanon Tumblin, 42, received serious internal injuries at around 4 p.m. Monday after being struck by a 2011 Peterbilt garbage truck driven by Troy Martin Jr., 36.

The accident took place while the two were picking up garbage from a Dumpster located at Lincoln Elementary Magnet School at 518 W. Society Ave. Banks said Tumblin was serving as the ground guide for the truck, exited the truck, and was struck and run over while Martin was backing up the vehicle.

Banks said the injured employee was initially sent to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and later sent to Macon some time Monday evening. The accident remains under investigation by the APD Traffic Unit.
