Albany Utility Board OKs broadband fees, well rehab
Board recommends funding be approved by the Albany City Commission

ALBANY — The Albany Utility Board voted at its meeting Thursday to recommend that the Albany City Commission approve funding for a pair of items.
The Utility Board OK’d a request for $52,037.45 for service fees associated with bandwidth sales and $53,120 for the rehabilitation of well No. 39 at Kensington Court, part of the in-progress construction of an elevated water tank that will improve water pressure in the northwest portion of the city.
Asked for a report on progress of that project, Utility Board Water Quality Supervisor Kurt Anthony told commissioners the concrete portion of the project is complete.
“We’ll do the bowl assembly on the ground, install it, then put the top on the tank,” Anthony said. “Once that’s in place, the plumbers will come in and do their work.”
Assistant City Manager Stephen Collier told the board that payment of telecommunications service fees is mandated by the federal government.
“We have to submit data on the bandwidth we sell, and fees are calculated from that information,” Collier said. “The group that collects the data is designated by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to collect all fees.”
Both matters approved by the Utility Board will be considered for final approval by the Albany City Commission at its Feb. 23 business meeting.
