ALBANY — The Westover High School Patriots are set to celebrate an alumni reunion this weekend. All school graduates, along with family and friends, are expected to come together to celebrate their alma mater.

“We are really excited about this weekend’s event,” said Yaz Johnson, pastor of Walk By Faith Ministries and chairperson of the event. “We have people coming from as far away as Chicago and alumni from as far back as the 1970s.”

Other chairpersons include Grady Caldwell and Jeff Hall.

Activities are planned for the entire weekend so former school mates can reunite and share their memories of the Albany high school.

Johnson said weekend tickets are $65.

Events kick off Friday with a meet-and-greet at Bowl-A-Rama, located at 1200 West Broad Ave. That gathering will continue from 3-7 p.m. ($15 unlimited bowling is available).

“Later Friday evening we are having a Red Carpet affair at the Flint RiverQuarium from 9 p.m. until,” said Johnson. “On Saturday, we are going to have a health fair at Westover that morning, and then we are going to bring in a lot of the alumni basketball players and have a slam dunk contest and pep rally. On Saturday night, we are going to go to the football game. Westover is playing their rivals, Monroe, and that is going to be a sure enough big deal.”

According to Johnson, the health fair will be held in the WHS cafeteria from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday morning.

“Many of the alumni who are in the medical field now will be providing health screenings, checking blood pressure, etc.,” said Johnson.

The alumni pep rally is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday with a basketball clinic following from 1-2 p.m., according to the schedule. Tailgating will kick off at 1 p.m. until the game starts at Hugh Mills Stadium at 7 p.m.

Sunday morning, a breakfast is planned in the WHS cafeteria from 8-10 a.m. before a church service.

“On Sunday, we are having church service in the Westover auditorium that I will be preaching at,” said Johnson. “Then we will be having our memorial service for alums that have passed away. That will be a separate part of the service.”

According to Johnson, all of the money raised from the weekend event will go to benefit Westover High School.
