ALBANY — Albany State University’s dance program will pay tribute to Nina Simone in its presentation of the “Evening of Dance, Art and Music: Essentially Nina” production on April 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the ASU West Campus Theater, located in Building J.

One of the highlights of “Essentially Nina” is a piece by Chris Harris, a hip-hop dancer/choreographer. Harris’ work, entitled “Misunderstood,” uses rap artist Common’s song of the same title, which itself samples Simone’s “Don’t Let Me be Misunderstood.” Harris artfully integrates high-energy moves, intricate gestures and contemporary dance to create an impactful work that underscores the intrinsic link between adversity and faith.

The evening of dance will be punctuated by live musical performances by, among others, vocalist Ashleigh Wright and bassist Trelawny Francis. The ASU dance production will also feature the works of visual artist Camyljah Giddens.

“I am excited to present what will be our first dance performance as part of a newly consolidated institution. I am also pleased to have the participation of music and visual artists, and literary artists like poet Bummi Niyonu Anderson. There’s a lot of wonderful talent in our Southwest Georgia ‘Eden’,” said Elizabeth Delancy, the program coordinator of dance at ASU.

Ticket prices for “Essentially Nina” are $8 for general admission; $5 for seniors, military and children, and $1 for Albany State University students with valid ID cards.

For additional information, contact Delancy at (229) 317-6991 or email [email protected].
