Barbecue fundraiser to benefit Dougherty County 4-H Club
Orders are being taken through April 12 for Dougherty County 4-H fundraiser

ALBANY — A tasty fundraiser for the Dougherty County 4-H Club is set up for next month to bring in support for the club’s programs.
A barbecue fundraiser, from which all proceeds will go to support Dougherty 4-H, will provide a chopped barbecue sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw and a slice of cake for $8 a plate. Orders are due by April 12, giving officials a week to purchase the supplies and pull all the meals together.
“The men will start working 12 hours out,” Jazmin Thomas, the 4-H youth development agent for University of Georgia Dougherty County Extension, said.
Plates can be picked up from the Dougherty County Extension’s office from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 19. Thomas said officials are expecting to offer traditional or spicy sauce options.
Those who spend at least $50 can receive a free delivery to their place of business if they are in Albany. Cash or checks will be accepted, with checks made payable to “Dougherty County Extension/4-H.”
The request for deliveries will also be taken through April 12.
“One person (from the business) can come in, drop off the money and turn in the order form,” Thomas said.
Thomas said the money would help offset the costs of all 4-H programming. This is the first time the extension office has held this fundraiser.
“We hope that if it does well, we will do it biannually,” she said.
The office staff and volunteers are conducting the fundraiser, while the 4-H parents are helping the office to promote it. The products to make the meals will be coming from Albany area markets.
The children in the program are currently involved in their own fundraiser and will not be selling plates. Thomas said the goal is to raise $2,000.
The price is the same regardless of the number of plates.
“People remember 4-H from when they were kids,” she said. “A fundraiser like this is easy to get behind because (everyone) gets something out of it.”
Thomas said the plates that are left over will be available to those who come off the street on a first-come, first-served basis.
“If something comes up and you need extra time (to pick up plates), give us a call and we will work with you,” she said.
