ALBANY — Former University of Georgia standout Damien Gary has been selected by the Dougherty County School Board to become the new head football coach at Dougherty High School.

The board announced Gary’s selection at its regular meeting on Wednesday.

“Coach Gary has a strong history in building student athletes, both on and off of the field,” DCSS Superintendent Ken Dyer said. “And we are excited to welcome him to our team.”

Gary comes to Albany from Charlotte, N.C., where he served as an assistant coach and wide receivers coach at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

“The Trojan Nation is proud to welcome Coach Gary to Albany,” Dougherty High principal Eddie Johnson said. “Coach Gary was an incredible athlete and has grown into the kind of coach we need.”

In other action taken at Wednesday’s meeting, the board approved a risk services contract with LRA Constructors for the Magnolia Early Construction project that includes a guaranteed maximum price of $5.36 million with an owner occupancy date of Aug. 1.

The contract also includes $500,000 for furniture, fixtures and equipment and a design fee of 7.10 percent.

Construction staff has been informed of the superintendent’s intent to relocate the Southwest Georgia Regional Achievement Center from Highland Avenue to the empty Sylvester Road Elementary School when students return from the Christmas/New Year’s Holiday in 2019.

The Sylvester Road building was vacated in 2012 and has been used for storage since. Renovations will require, at a minimum, new toilet fixtures installed at middle and high school heights, new wall paint, new ceilings and flooring, miscellaneous HVAC repairs, roof repairs and kitchen upgrades.

The board agreed to enter into a contract with SRJ Architects for the project that will carry a stated cost limitation of $2 million and a fee based on the DCSS architectural fee schedule.

Board Chairwoman Velvet Edwards-Poole also reminded members of the Georgia School Boards Association Conference in Savannah June 7-9.

The next meeting of the DCSS BOE is set for March 12.
