Carters named co-chairs of local Boys and Girls Clubs
Albany Boys and Girls Clubs conduct 53rd annual meeting
From Staff Reports
ALBANY — It was a night to remember for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Albany.
At the organization’s 53rd annual meeting Friday night, Boys and Girls Clubs officials said the gathering will be logged in the history books as one of Southwest Georgia’s most historic nights.
Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, were inducted as honorary co-chairs of the local Boys and Girls Clubs Board of Directors, along with Federal Judge Leslie A. Gardner, Dougherty County School Superintendent Kenneth Dyer, Montezuma Police Chief Eric Finch, Nigel Poole, Todd Davis and Judy Deriso.
After several of the club’s current board members and staff received national service awards for outstanding service over five or more years, B&G Cubs of Albany CEO Marvin Laster announced the expansion of operations to Plains, where the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Unit is located, and to the Montezuma Club located in Macon County.
The expansion of the organization increases the number of clubs in operation from seven to nine.
President Carter and the former first lady received a standing ovation as they were inducted as honorary Boys and Girls Clubs members, and before the night ended, both shook the hands of each person in attendance and posed for pictures.
Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards also presented the club a $10,000 grant, cementing a partnership with the city of Albany. The funds will be used for juvenile delinquency prevention programming at regional B&G clubs.
