ALBANY — The American Diabetes Association says there are over 29 million Americans with diabetes, and six million who do not know they have it.
In light of this, the city of Albany will be hosting a town hall meeting to address the importance of understanding diabetes. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the East Albany Community Center located at 1721 E. Oglethorpe Blvd.
City Commissioner Jon Howard said that the speaker for the meeting will be Heather O’Connor, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The commission said O’Connor will explain what diabetes is and the risk factors associated with the disease.
She is also expected to discuss what the signs and symptoms for the disease are, explain what neuropathy is and what causes it and discuss why so many poor and minorities in the community are now being treated for diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association says there are 85 million Americans who are considered pre-diabetic, and that many of these individuals will develop Type 2 diabetes within 10 years. At the meeting, O’Connor will answer questions on risk factors of diabetes and discuss who should be tested for pre-diabetes.
Howard would like to urge citizens to attend this meeting, especially those who suspect they may be at risk, and learn how they can minimize their chances of developing this disease.
