Dougherty officials looking for board volunteers
Appointments allow citizens to have greater voice in government
By Carlton Fletcher
ALBANY — Your Dougherty County government is looking for a few good men … and women.
As 2016 winds down and a new year awaits on the horizon, county officials are looking for applicants to serve on various appointed boards and commissions. Those officials note that the volunteers who serve play a vital role in the running of their community.
“I know that people are so busy today, but it’s important to have as many local voices as possible with a say in how the county operates,” County Clerk Jawahn Ware said. “We have some exceptional volunteers serving on our various boards, but I’d really like to see more step up. We have some positions that have had vacancies for quite some time.
“This is truly an opportunity for people in the community to get actively involved in the running of their government.”
The county reappoints or selects new applicants to the various positions that are available near the end of each year so that appointees can begin serving with the start of the new year. Some positions require more of a time commitment than others.
“Some of the appointments are heavily engaged, and while others may be equally as important, they’re not as involved,” Ware said. “We post descriptions of the positions on our website so that interested persons can determine which fit best into their schedule.”
Positions such as those on the Board of Elections, the Tax Assessors Board, the Economic Development Commission and the Library Board are among the more active appointed positions.
For 2017, appointments are available for:
— Four positions on the Air Conditioning, Heating and Ventilation Board (meets as needed); one appointment to the Dougherty Health Board; two appointments to the Citizens Transportation Committee; one appointment to the EDC board; five appointments to the Electrical Board (one appointee must be a master electrician, two must be electric suppliers, one must be an engineer and one is a citizen member); four appointments to the Fire Code Board of Appeals (meets as needed); and three appointments to the Gas Board (meets as needed).
Other appointments include two members of the Golden Triangle RC&D Council; four appointments to the Historic Preservation Committee; two appointments to the Library Board; three appointments to the Planning Commission; three appointments to the Plumbing Board (two members must be master plumbers, one citizen; board meets as needed); one appointment to the Southwest Georgia Community Action Council; one appointment to the Southwest Georgia Housing Task Force; two appointments to the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission, and one appointment to the Tax Assessors Board.
