ALBANY — Downtown Albany recently added a new addition to its list of growing businesses. Downtown Dawsyn, owned by Morgan Layfield, is a women’s clothing boutique with modern styles suitable for the fashion-forward women of southwest Georgia and beyond.
“We originally started online,” Layfield said. “We were am eCommerce store, and then we kind of progressed into getting a storefront.
“We began selling clothes online October of last year. I was actually at home with my daughter, I’d just had her, and I was searching for jobs. I’ve always wanted to do a boutique, and with being at home with her, I had the opportunity to actually finally make an eCommerce store and start it that way. I didn’t want to start too big. I wanted to kind of start small and work my way up.”
The online portion of Downtown Dawsyn ships its boutique-style clothing to surrounding states with customers from states such as Tennessee and Texas.
Layfield said that she has always loved fashion — especially the business side. She went to school for business and has worked at several major clothing and beauty retailers.
Downtown Dawsyn is located downtown with other popular local businesses such as Pretoria Fields, Cool Scoops and the Renaissance Art Cafe.
Asked why Downtown Dawsyn chose to move to a storefront, especially one in downtown Albany, Layfield said, “We attend a lot of events, local and out of town, and we realized that when we get our stuff in front of people, we’re able to sell more items rather than just be strictly eCommerce. We always wanted to go downtown, which is why we included it in the name, and I think it was a great time because the city of Albany is putting so much effort into revitalizing downtown. So it was perfect to get in here and get a storefront. I hope a lot of businesses soon follow.”
Layfield said that the downtown area gets a surprising amount of foot traffic, and even after her successful launch she continues to have customers come in every day.
The store is deceptively spacious with collections of modern styles displayed throughout. Layfield said that Downtown Dawsyn showcases print, patterns and colors and called it a bright store. Pieces include floral blouses and distressed denim.
Although the clothing comes from the fashion districts of Los Angeles and Atlanta, the jewelry is locally made by artisans and is for sale on display in the center of the store. All of the pieces are unique and unavailable in popular chain stores. Downtown Dawsyn is also unique in its attitude toward its customers.
“I love getting to talk to people and meeting new people face to face,” Layfield said. “We really are big on customer service, so when you come in here, anybody, whether you’re shopping on the sales rack or you’re buying the most expensive item in here, you’re going to be treated well. We appreciate every woman that walks in here.”
