THOMASVILLE — Small Business Saturday will be celebrated in downtown Thomasville Saturday, a day to shop at local small businesses in support of the community.

American Express began Small Business Saturday in 2010, and the tradition has continued every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Small Business Saturday is part of the “shop small” movement to support small business owners and communities.

According to a press release from the city of Thomasville, the U.S. Retail Industry reports that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 will stay in the community, compared to $43 spent at a national chain.

“When you shop local, you are embracing what makes your community unique, which is why Thomasville is a destination for both shopping and dining,” April Norton, the city of Thomasville’s Main Street and Business Development Director, said in a press release. “While supporting the small business owners, you are in turn conserving your tax dollars, helping the environment and you are creating local jobs.”

The community can take the day for holiday shopping and dining in downtown Thomasville and show support for small businesses by choosing to shop local during the holiday season.
