Lee County Navy JROTC participates in drill meet

LEESBURG — Lee County High School’s Navy JROTC was one of seven high schools in the state of Georgia to participate in the All Service JROTC Drill Meet held recently at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville. Teams were scored in events such as the Academic Bowl, PT competition, color guard, individual and dual exhibitions.

Albany Tech students bring home SkillsUSA awards

ALBANY — Albany Technical College students from Welding Technology, Dental Assisting, Nursing, Masonry and Cosmetology disciplines represented Albany Tech during recent SkillsUSA competition. Two students won Gold awards: Dennis Benton (Welding Sculpture) and Cemon Ross (Dental Assisting); three students won Silver awards: Amanda Duncan (Dental Assisting), Kristen Williams (First Aid/CPR) and Khalif Colier (Masonry); and two students won Bronze awards: Aujanela Alexander (Nail Care), Melissa Jarrett, Jeanette Bradley, Amber Nelson and Azsaaunna Bryant (Health Knowledge Bowl).

Gold award winners Benton and Ross will move on to compete at the SkillsUSA National Competition in Louisville, Kentucky in June.

Baynes-Dunning of Albany receives Justice Benham Award

ATLANTA — Albany attorney Karen B. Baynes-Dunning, wife of Albany State University President Art Dunning, and a former Fulton County Juvenile Court judge, was among the recipients of the 18th Annual Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service, presented recently by the State Bar of Georgia and the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism.

Brooks Receives Department of Energy award

ALBANY — John Whitlock Brooks, son of Woodrow Whitlock Brooks and Leigh Wetherbee Brooks, has received an award from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research. He was selected for outstanding academic accomplishments in his PhD program at Columbia University in New York. He will study plasma physics fall semester at Princeton University.

Albany State to celebrate Founders Day this week

ALBANY — Albany State University will commemorate 114 years of heritage at the 2017 Founder’s Day celebration scheduled later this week. The convocation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Billy C. Black Auditorium.

The annual event commemorates the legacy of Albany State University and founder Joseph Winthrop Holley. This year’s theme is “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Investing in the Future.”

Alumnus Marvin Laster will serve as the keynote speaker at the convocation. Laster is a 2000 honor graduate of Albany State and a 2012 honor graduate of Mercer University’s Stetson School of Economics and Business. He currently serves as the Chief Professional Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany.
