ALBANY — Long-time Turner Job Corps nurse Clementine Carter has received the National Job Corps Hall of Fame Award for “Staff Motivator of the Year.” Carter is a registered nurse and has worked at the Turner Job Corps campus for 45 years.
“It means a whole lot,” she said of receiving the award. “This means all my labor has not been in vain. I love the students. At least I know I have touched at least one student’s life. You can’t save them all, but I know a few of them I have saved.”
Colleagues describe Carter as “the heart and soul of the Turner Job Corps.” They say, “Her unwavering commitment was evident even during the challenging times of COVID-19.”
Co-workers credit Carter for keeping an upbeat and motivating demeanor, encouraging others to stay focused on their goals.
Carter received her award during U.S. Department of Labor/Job Corps’ 2023 Student Leadership Summit. The Hall of Fame ceremony was a relaunch of both staff and student national awards; the last ceremony was held in 2004. Job Corps made awards to seven individuals, including students and staff from across the nation.
Carter said her award was a surprise and a reflection of the work she does every day, showing up even when she doesn’t feel her best.
“I try to instill that into the students, that this is a learning process,” she said. “This is your job. This is your future. And you have to go to work every day, not just some days, but every day. You must think one day you might have a family to feed.”
Carter said even after nearly 50 years of work, she does think of retirement but has no plans just yet.
