ALBANY — Robotics teams from all over the state of Georgia were in Albany this weekend competing in the weekend-long FIRST Robotics Peachtree District Qualifier at the Albany Civic Center.
The robotics competition, which began Friday, brought 35 teams of students from across Georgia together to battle for a berth to compete in the FIRST Robotics state championship set for April 5-8 at the University of Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum.
The local event’s lead sponsor, Procter & Gamble, contributed $50,000 for Albany to host the event and to help support any local teams, of which there were six competing, that qualify for the state championship.

A trio of robots, designed and built by high school students from robotics teams across the state, compete in Saturday’s FIRST Robotics Peachtree District Qualifier event at the Albany Civic Center. During the competition robots from different teams have to work together to defeat another group of robots using a point system. Points are awarded as robots perform certain tasks such as collecting balls and shooting them into a basket and collecting gears and carrying them to their team’s scoring area. Residents at Cornerstone apartments, located at 608 Moultrie Road, said that eviction notices were placed on the doors of all of the units this week, giving them three days to pay two months’ rent or face being removed in three days. Tenants said they were confused to whom rent should be paid and are frustrated by the living conditions at the complex that is more than 50 years old.
During a work session Tuesday, Terry McCormick of McCormick Solutions provided the Lee County Board of Commissioners with an update on the county’s 2026 tax digest and ongoing reappraisal efforts.
