Former MCLB-Albany commanding officer takes county manager post in Colorado
Col. Don Davis, former commanding officer of MCLB-Albany, assumes manager role in Colorado
From Staff Reports
GOLDEN, Colo. — Officials in Jefferson County, Colo., announced last week that a Marine colonel familiar to the Albany area will assume a role in the county’s government later this year.
Col. Don Davis, former commanding officer of Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany, has been selected to assume the role of Jefferson County manager, reporting directly to the Board of County Commissioners.
The current county manager there, Ralph Schell, is set to retire in early March, officials said last week.
Davis will join the county following a nearly three-decade career in the U.S. Marine Corps, during which he has served in various roles. He left his post at MCLB-Albany in May 2015, after three years, to become strategy and campaign plans chief for North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command based in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“I have enjoyed serving our country for 27 years, and look forward to serving the residents of (Jefferson County) in the same manner,” Davis, who had been rumored to be interested in local government while in Albany, said in a release. “(The county) has a bright future and a fantastic team of employees.
“It is the best choice for me and my family, and I am excited to work together with the Board of County Commissioners to ensure the community thrives long into the future.”
The Dover, N.J., native is a graduate of the Advanced Logistics Officers Course and the Marine Corps Logistics Education Program at Pennsylvania State University. He holds two master’s degrees: one in public administration from Webster University, graduating with high honors in March 1996, and a second in strategic studies from the Marine Corps War College.
“Davis brings a strong commitment to the values guiding the county,” Jefferson County Commissioner and Board Chair Libby Szabo said. “He has the ideal combination of leadership and experience, and we are confident in his ability to successfully guide staff in achieving the county’s vision.”
Davis has been married to his wife, Becky, for 27 years. They have four children.
A phone call seeking further comment from Davis was not immediately returned.
Kate McIntire, the public engagement director for Jefferson County, will serve as the interim county manager until Davis assumes the role in spring 2017, officials with the county said.
