Fundraising campaign ongoing for Moultrie woman’s lung transplant
Bonnie Griner approved for lung transplant due to cystic fibrosis
From Staff Reports
MOULTRIE — The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA), a charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-related expenses, is involved in a volunteer campaign to raise funds for a Moultrie woman in need of a lung transplant.
With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant patients are unable to take on the cost of surgery. Among them is Bonnie Griner, who was born in 1979 and later diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
Doctors at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., have recommended a lung transplant for Griner, for whom an estimated $100,000 is being raised by Moultrie volunteers, officials with COTA said.
As of Monday, slightly more than $17,000 had been raised.
Griner’s family has asked for assistance from COTA. Officials said the organization’s priority is to ensure a transplant does not financially devastate a family, and that 100 percent of all funds raised are used for patients’ transplant-related expenses.
Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising activities to help offset expenses. Individuals and groups interested in more information can contact Community Coordinator Lacey Herndon at (229) 873-9990 or [email protected].
Donations may be mailed to COTA, 2501 W. COTA Drive, Bloomington, Ind. 47403. Checks or money orders should be made payable to COTA with “In Honor of Team Bonnie G” written on the memo line.
Secure credit card donations also are accepted online at cotaforteambonnieg.com. The website lists several events in the coming months to raise money for Griner’s transplant and post-surgery expenses.
Officials with COTA said more than 200,000 volunteers have donated their time and financial resources to ensure children and young adults receive transplants. COTA’s inaugural Miracle Maker Celebration in June 2014 raised nearly $125,000 to further COTA’s mission, while the 2015 Miracle Maker Celebration generated nearly $150,000, they said.
