ATLANTA — Georgia House Speaker Rep. David Ralston appointed 15 legislators last week to the House Study Committee on Base Realignment and Closure, or BRAC.

The committee, which will be chaired by Rep. Dave Belton of House District 112, also includes Reps. Ed Rynders, R-Leesburg, of District 152, Darrel Ealum, D-Albany, of District 153, and Mike Cheokas, R-Americus, of District 138. Ralston made the announcement of the committee’s formation in a memorandum.

The committee was formed pursuant to House Bill 1135, of which Belton and Rynders are co-sponsors. It has a role of working out ways to protect Georgia’s military installations should BRAC be re-enacted. The next BRAC is expected as early as Fiscal Year 2017.

Georgia maintains the fifth-largest military population among states in the United States, providing a direct economic impact of more than $20 billion annually. The committee is expected to have at least five meetings before it is abolished on Dec. 1, Ralston’s memorandum said.
