Four spaces at health clinic dedicated for new, expectant mothers

ALBANY — The work of staff at the Mirian Worthy Women’s Health Center and the needs of the patients they serve were recognized with the dedication of parking spaces at the clinic for new and expectant mothers on Wednesday.
The women’s health center is one of the clinic sites for Albany Area Primary Health Care. Present for the dedication were representatives from AAPHC and Peach State Health Plan.
The four spaces are marked “New Mom Parking” and are located outside the front door of the 2100 Palmyra Road clinic. They are reserved specifically for pregnant patients and mothers who have recently delivered a baby.
“As a provider, Peach State Health Plan wanted to take the time to recognize what they (Mirian Worthy staff) do,” said Marty Fallon, senior director of network accounts for Peach State.
The Worthy health center opened in 2009 and was moved to its current location last month. It currently has three physicians, with one more coming on board later this year, and four midwives.
“It is nice to make it convenient for (mothers) to get in,” Dr. Keisha Callins, one of the facility’s providers.
AAPHC CEO Shelley Spires said the move of the Mirian Worthy center allowed an expansion from 12 exam rooms to 20 exam rooms. Wednesday’s dedication, if nothing else, helps patients needing to take the fewest number of steps to stay off their feet longer.
“It allows women expecting or (who have) already delivered access to the building while not (walking) very far,” Spires said.
A laboratory, ultrasound room, bone density scan room, mammography room, social worker room, two procedure rooms, a waiting area and work spaces for providers are among the resources at the new clinic. The vacated facility on South Madison Street will be converted to a pediatric/family medicine/urgent care center.
