Hurricane Michael hits Georgia as category 3 storm
From Staff Reports
Hurricane Michael is now the first Category 3 storm to track into Georgia since the 1800s.
The storm hit Georgia just after 6 p.m. with wind speeds more than 120 mph.
Hurricane Michael loses some force
In the 8 p.m. advisory, Hurricane Michael was downgraded to a Category 1 storm with winds of 90 mph.
The center continued to move through southwest Georgia, and is located 20 miles from Albany.
Dangerous storm surge, hurricane force winds, flash flooding, and possible tornadoes continue according to the National Hurricane Center.
But the powerful and historic Category 4 hurricane that slammed into Florida’s coast is no more.
“As Michael moves farther inland into Georgia and areas less familiar with extreme winds, trees become a clear and present danger,” the National Weather Service posted on Twitter. “Minimize your risk in single story homes by staying in interior rooms AWAY FROM LARGE TREES and overhanging branches.”
Power outages, flights canceled
Nearly 100,000 people in Georgia were already out of power as of 8 p.m. That number is expected to grow.
Delta announced all Wednesday flights for Panama City (ECP), Tallahassee (TLH), Destin – Fort Walton Beach (VPS), Albany (ABY), Valdosta (VLD) and Dothan (DHN) have been proactively canceled due to Category 4 Hurricane’s Michael landfall in the Florida panhandle.
