THOMASVILLE — “Another Night of Bluegrass,” featuring Larry Stephenson, will be held at the Thomasville Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, officials with the city of Thomasville said.
Presented by the city of Thomasville and WTUF-FM, “Another Night of Bluegrass” is an 18-year tradition for Thomasville music lovers. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Highly regarded as one of bluegrass music’s most recognizable and finest high lead and tenor vocalists, Stephenson has been headlining festivals and concerts for 30 years. He formed The Larry Stephenson Band in 1989 while living in his home state of Virginia, and his many appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and RFD-TV have made The Larry Stephenson Band a fan favorite all across the U.S. and Canada.
Born in Harrisonburg, Va., and raised in King George, Va., Stephenson’s father put a mandolin in his hand at the age of 5 and by the age of 11, the younger Stephenson had cut his first record. Graduating high school in 1976, father and son had a regional band for three years, performing at festivals, concerts and performing as regulars at The Wheeling Jamboree in Wheeling, W. Va.
Stephenson credits the rich music scene of Virginia and Washington, D.C., for much of his musical success, having seen and heard many first-generation bluegrass performers in person and on the radio, an available biography on Stephenson said.
Throughout his 30 years of fronting his own band, and his more than 40 years as a major touring performer, Stephenson has been recognized and rewarded by fans and peers in the bluegrass industry. With a move to Nashville, Tenn., in 1992, the band became regulars at the Grand Ole Opry. In 1996, the Virginia Folk Music Association inducted Stephenson into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame.
Since that time, he has garnered numerous International Bluegrass Music Awards and The Society for The Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America nominations and awards. In 2018, The Society for The Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America inducted Stephenson into its Hall of Greats.
“Another Night of Bluegrass” concerts are held at the Thomasville Municipal Auditorium. Tickets are $10, and all seating is reserved. Tickets are available in advance at the Thomasville Visitors Center, at 144 E. Jackson St., and at the door — which will open at 7 p.m.
