LEESBURG — Lee County officials announced Friday plans to temporarily withdraw the county’s certificate of need extension request for the Lee County Medical Center.

In a news release, officials said the extension request, filed Feb. 1, would be refiled closer to a May 2019 deadline if it remains necessary.

“The Georgia Department of Community Health asked us to refile the extension request closer to the May deadline to allow for any change of circumstances,” Medical Center President/CEO Eddie Alexander said. “This will allow LCMC to show the additional progress that will be made before the deadline.

“The process is proceeding, and our team will be able to provide the department updated information in our next filing about the work we will accomplish this spring before the May deadline.”

The CON for the 60-bed, $123 million Lee hospital was approved by the Department of Community Health on Nov. 15, 2017, but prolonged challenges kept plans for the hospital from moving forward until all challenges were overturned.
