LEESBURG — After a long battle with cancer, Leesburg Police Chief Charles Moore passed away on Sunday at the Willson Hospice House in Albany. Moore was 60 years old.

“He served the community well,” Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals said of Moore. “He shared a lot of love for the law enforcement world and our community through the years by doing different events for the community such as collecting toys for children at Christmas. He was always there for people in the community.”

Rachals spoke emotionally about Moore’s unconditional love for his family. The sheriff, Leesburg City Manager Bob Alexander and other city and county officials on Monday mourned a man who they said touched so many lives in the community in a positive way.

“Chief Moore was an outstanding police officer, and we are going to miss him tremendously,” Alexander said.

Moore’s career earned him multiple law enforcement service awards, including Officer of the Year for the state of Georgia and Investigator of the Year for the Southern United States. Additionally, he served as district representative of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, as an advisory board member at the ABAC Police Academy, and was the first elected president of the Georgia D.A.R.E. Association. Moore founded the Leesburg/Lee County Foster Kid Toy Drive in 2001 and was a chairman every year until his death.

Outside of his career in law enforcement, Moore owned C & S Lawn Care. He was a member of multiple organizations including Chehaw Lodge No. 701 F & AM, Albany Shrine Club — as a member and a three-time past-president — Hasan Shriners of Albany and Kinchafoonee Baptist Church.

Maj. David Bullington is currently serving as Leesburg PD’s acting police chief. A committee will be convened soon to review applications for the next chief.
