MACON – Dougherty County Farm Bureau Director Mark Masters is serving the first year of a two-year term on the American Farm Bureau Federation Issue Advisory Committee for Water Supply and Quality.

The committee considers topics and policies relevant to agricultural access to water, water conservation and preserving and improving water quality. Masters represents Georgia as one of 20 members on the committee. The committee is one of 13 issue advisory committees established by AFBF to form its positions on topics that affect broad segments of U.S. agriculture.

Masters raises grass-fed beef with his family on its farm in Terrell County. He serves as director of the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center (GWPPC) at Albany State University and is a leading expert in agricultural water use and policy in the Southeast. Masters has led numerous research and outreach projects related to water resources in Georgia and has positioned the GWPPC as a trusted technical resource for the state and its water planning efforts.

Masters is a founding member and executive manager of ACF Stakeholders Inc. and was instrumental in helping the group reach consensus on a sustainable water management plan for the entire Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Basin. Outside Georgia, Masters recently supported development of the Potomac River Basin Comprehensive Plan.

Masters and his wife, Amy, live in Terrell County with their three daughters. They attend First Baptist Church in Dawson, where Mark is a deacon.

Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the state’s largest general farm organization and has 158 county offices. Its volunteer members actively participate in local, state and national activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors. GFB officers its members a wide variety of benefits, including insurance, but enrollment in any of the member benefits is optional and not a requirement for membership.
