TIFTON — Several metro Albany projects were included among the 38 contracts that the Georgia Department of Transportation awarded Friday for construction and maintenance. Statewide, GDOT awarded projects totalling $97.6 million.
The largest volume contract, valued at $14.2 million, is for 19.5 miles of resurfacing and shoulder rehabilitation on State Route 35 in Colquitt and Thomas counties, GDOT officials said.
In metro Albany, awards for resurfacing and other road work included:
— $3.52 million for 5.342 miles of SR 520 in Lee County from Terrell County to Dawson Road;
— $5.16 million for 9.5 miles of SR 520 in Lee and Terrell counties from Tammy Lane to the Lee County line;
— $1.37 million for 10.842 miles of SR 55 in Terrell County from the Calhoun County line to south of U.S. Highway 82;
— $7.35 million for 29.224 miles of SR 3 in Mitchell County from the Dougherty County line to the Thomas County line;
— $1.59 million for 4.24 miles of SR 37 in Mitchell County;
— $921,855 for 1.8 miles of SR 3 in Lee County.
GDOT’s first obligation with funds resulting from Georgia’s Transportation Funding Act (TFA) is to maintain and improve existing infrastructure. This month, pavement preservation dominates with 22 resurfacing contracts awarded in the amount of $58.5 million. These pavement preservation projects represent 60 percent of the awarded contracts across the state.
“I am delighted that Georgia DOT continues to address maintenance that was previously deferred,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry said. “The funds that result from the Transportation Funding Act enable us to address our critical infrastructure — including our pavements. Our goal is to restore a 15-year resurfacing cycle instead of the 50-year cycle we faced in 2014.”
