MOULTRIE – A Moultrie policeman was arrested by Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents after being accused Tuesday of assaulting an restrained individual who had been taken into custody.

The GBI said agents on Friday arrested Police Officer Sam Smith on two charges — assault under the color of office and violation of oath of office. Smith was taken to the Colquitt County Jail.

On Thursday, GBI officials said, Moultrie Police Chief Frank Lang asked the agency to investigate excessive use of force allegations involving Smith. The allegations made Tuesday against Smith said he assaulted an individual who was restrained after being taken into custody.

This investigation was active and ongoing Friday, GBI officials said.
