ALBANY — No charges are pending, according to officials with the Albany Police Department, after a 6-year-old was struck by a car Monday afternoon while crossing North Slappey Boulevard.

“The juvenile, Za’Niyah Mitchell, sustained a serious injury to her right leg and was transported initially to Phoebe (Putney Memorial Hospital) by EMS,” APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said in an email Tuesday. “She will be transferred to Navicent Health Care in Macon for further treatment.”

According to Banks, the child was accompanied by two adults, her mother, Lashaina Mitchell, 24, and her aunt, A’Shantia Mitchell, 19, when the accident occurred.

“The pedestrians were waiting to cross North Slappey Boulevard to go to Maryland Drive,” Banks said. “The pedestrians crossed the northbound lanes. The adults stopped in the central turn lane, but the juvenile continued running west into the southbound lanes. A vehicle stopped in the left lane to avoid the juvenile. A 2008 Nissan Altima, driven by Chiaka Nealy, struck the juvenile. No charges are pending at this time, and the crash remains under investigation.”
