ALBANY — An overturned semi-dump truck backed up traffic for several hours Monday afternoon in the west bound lane of Liberty Expressway from Slappey Boulevard to the Jefferson Street exit.

“There was a mechanical issue with the truck,” said Albany Police Department spokeswoman Phyllis Banks. “The driver, Romanuel Hird, 44, lost control and the vehicle overturned. Hird was transported to the hospital by EMS for further observation.”

Reports indicate that the truck was owned by Renewal Recycling, out of Phenix City, Ala., a scrap metal company. emergency personnel and clean-up crews were on the scene clearing the lanes.

The driver was cited for Failure to Maintain Lane, according to Banks.
