Dougherty County Commissioner Anthony Jones says leadership begins with listening. But during a Friday afternoon news conference at Albany City Hall, the District 6 commissioner took a moment to do the talking — officially announcing his bid for reelection.

Beyond the pristinely curated lunch spot, owner Sheri Smith has created a small hub of health and wellness services, retail and local partnerships — an example of the type of multi-use business model many small communities are increasingly embracing as they reinvest in historic downtown properties.
“Any public funds have to be used for a public cause,” Garner told commissioners. “You as a body cannot authorize spending funds that could benefit a private individual or a private enterprise. I am advising you there are concerns this could violate the Georgia Constitution.”
The winner in the May 19 general primary contest will earn a four-year term as chairman as there is no Republican candidate in the race.
“We want outcomes. We know that in Dougherty County and Albany we suffer from the lack of data infrastructure. We’ll gather the data and ensure there is a strategy in return on investment. What we’ve been missing is the coordination, the infrastructure and the organization.”
