ALBANY — Cancer awareness and resilience will be the main topics discussed at this year’s annual women’s health fair scheduled Saturday by Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
The fair will be held at Albany State University’s West Campus in the student center from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature health screenings, information booths, free continental breakfast and lunch, door prizes, physician-led sessions and a survivor recognition ceremony.
This year’s theme, “Be Resilient,” is meant to inspire women and let them know they are capable of bouncing back from or adjusting to challenges. The guest speaker for the event is Evelyn Braxton, star of WE TV’s “Braxton Family Values.”
Braxton was a full-time mother, pastor and her children’s singing coach. Due to personal struggles she had to overcome, Braxton embarked on a passion for life coaching. She also started an organization, “God Can Heal the Heart,” a self-empowering mentorship meant to help encourage, motivate and support others who have been through personal trauma.
Other presenters and topics at the health fair include:
— “Different Guidelines for Breast Screening,” Dr. Shawnta Anakwah, oncologist
— “Genetics,” Cathy Shoemaker, survivorship navigator
— “Lymphedema Physical Therapy,” Kirsty Vanderwalt, physical therapist
— “Clinical Trials,” Rashunda Trice, clinical research manager
Health screenings, including blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, will be ongoing until noon. Flu shots also will be available, and there will also be opportunities to engage with vendors, see a fashion show, and take part in Zumba and yoga activities.
The student center at ASU’s West Campus is located at 2400 Gillionville Road.
