ALBANY — Albany firefighters certainly didn’t find what they expected late Monday night when they got a call from a resident complaining about the odor of gas from an oven.
When they answered the 11:38 p.m. call at a multi-family dwelling on the 1400 block of Palmyra Road, firefighters discovered the stove and oven were, at best, unlikely culprits for a gas odor. They were powered by electricity.
“Engines 2, 1 and truck 41 responded to a report of a gas odor …,” the AFD report said. “The occupant advised his gas stove smelled funny. He had an electric stove. The only thing we could smell was maybe some burnt food on one of the eyes of the stove. This did not occur tonight. He advised us he had been meaning to call us about this problem.”
Firefighters also learned something about the occupant. “He also advised us he really didn’t know how to cook,” the report said. “He said he tried to cook some rice a couple of nights ago and he thought the stove was going to blow up. We didn’t find any problems … we unplugged one of the eyes (of the stove).”
Firefighters said they advised the occupant to contact his landlord to examine the stove and make sure there were no problems.
