IRWINVILLE — The Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will host a Robert E. Lee memorial service Saturday at Jefferson Davis State Park here.

The event, which begins at 10 a.m., will begin with a march from Irwinville to the park and will include re-enactors carrying Confederate battle flags. The service celebrates the 210th birthday of Lee, the son of Revolutionary War hero “Light Horse” Harry Lee and the commanding officer of the Confederate Army during the U.S. Civil War.

SCV officials note that the Irwinville park faces possible closure due to a shortage of funds at the state and county level. Saturday’s event, supporters hope, will bring attention and support to the venerable park.

The event is open to the public.
