ALBANY — The Administration on Aging leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month each May. Originated by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the month has historically been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past or current older people in our country.

To celebrate, SOWEGA Council on Aging will host open houses in all 14 of its senior centers on Friday from 9:45-11 a.m. This year’s theme for Older Americans Month is “Engage at Every Age.”

“Each Senior Center invites you, members of the community, to participate in the unique activities that keep them engaged and active,” officials with the Council on Aging said. “The SOWEGA Council on Aging is more than your grandma’s senior center. We’re dancing, drumming and staying active in the community. We truly engage as we age.”

The open houses will be in Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas and Worth counties. Council on Aging officials encourage interested individuals to call their county’s senior center for specific times and activities.

The center locations are:
