ALBANY — The Albany Police Department’s Gang Unit will take over the investigation of a Sunday-afternoon shooting incident that sent an Albany man to the hospital, according to officials.

“This incident is still under investigation,” APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said Monday. “It is unknown at this point whether or not the incident was gang-related, but APD’s Gang Unit will be taking over the investigation to determine if that is the case.”

The shooting, called in at 12:12 p.m. Sunday and described by witnesses as “gunshots from an unknown location,” left 20-year-old Kelsey Rayner with a bullet wound to the shoulder.

“Upon arrival at 2209 South Washington Street, officers made contact with victim Kelsey Rayner, and witnesses Gregory Marshall Jr., 21, and Romelo Perry, 19,” Banks said. “The three reported that they were walking in the backyard area of 2209 South Washington Street toward the alley that leads to Grady Street when they heard gunshots.”

Rayner was struck in the right shoulder, according to Banks, and EMS transported him to the hospital for treatment.

“Officers canvassed the area for any possible suspects without success,” Banks said. “There are no new updates on this case other than the Gang Unit will be taking over the investigation from here.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Albany Police Department at (229) 431-2100 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS (8477).
