SYLVESTER — Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed Friday evening that suspended Worth County Sheriff Jeff Hobby has been arrested.

GBI Public Affairs Deputy Director Bahan Rich said Hobby turned himself in at the Worth County Jail at about 5:40 p.m. on Friday after being charged with 66 counts of eavesdropping and surveillance which invades privacy of another. The arrest warrants cover acts that occurred from July 13, 2017 through Feb. 26.

Rich said Hobby is also charged with one count of violation of oath by a public officer. The suspended sheriff will be housed at the Lowndes County Jail pending his first appearance hearing before the Worth County magistrate judge on Monday.

Hobby was suspended from his position as sheriff in November, leading Gov. Nathan Deal to appoint Bobby Sapp to serve as the county’s sheriff. Hobby has been under fire since a drug search at Worth County High School on April 14 of last year prompted a lawsuit from the Southern Center for Human Rights.
