ALBANY — Walking into a thrift or antique store can feel somewhat transdimensional. Your footsteps get lighter, you speak in a whisper and you suddenly become aware of the sentimental value of a stranger’s forgotten possessions.

It’s a magical experience for some and for others, a thrift store is the place to go to customize a home in a unique and personal way that couldn’t be dubbed cookie-cutter. Take that, Ikea.

One of Albany’s hidden treasures, TD’s Thrift Store, is celebrating 10 years of business this year. The store is owned and operated by Odamise Taylor — or Ms. Taylor, if you’re thrifty. Taylor, who was born in Haiti, came to Albany by way of Orlando, Fla., where she grew up. Taylor said she loves living here because of how nice the people are.

Taylor opened TD’s Thrift Store 10 years ago as a way to work and be closer to her four children while they grew up. From a stay-at-home mom to business owner, Taylor has made the lifestyle work for her. The flexible schedule allows her to take her kids to school or to practices as they need. Sometimes they even help her out in the store.

TD’s Thrift Store was started from scratch at the location where it’s always been.

“I just feel blessed to be in business for 10 years,” Taylor said. “You know, there’s been up and downs, but I love what I do because I get to meet people, and you’d be amazed at how many different things come from different houses.”

Taylor also said that all of the items customers bring have a story, and many people like to tell their stories. She said she never knows what people will bring. Taylor buys and offers consignment for items in good condition.

On first glance, TD’s Thrift Store is very clean and inviting. After some digging and searching, you begin to find the hidden treasures tucked away within the store. A wedding display is front-and-center to greet customers. After that, the furniture dream shopping begins. Taylor said that furniture is the big seller, and it’s easy to see why. The couches alone create decor envy. A leather lounge chair was positioned in the corner that could serve as a bed for the more luxurious couch potato.

“I have people who furnish their whole house from here,” Taylor said. Those people know what they’re doing.

Taylor uses a lot of floral arrangements to bring color to the store. Customers can find items to sit on shelves, clothing, books, picture frames, throw pillows and more.

TD’s Thrift Store is located at 2401 Dawson Road in Albany, where she offers special items to elevate your decor. This reporter could not leave without bringing two dolls home. It really is a place to find exactly what you didn’t know you were looking for.

TD’s Thrift Store is also on Facebook and Instagram.
