ALBANY — Holiday travelers got more good news at the gas pump going into Thanksgiving week, as the average price of a gallon of gas continued to fall nationally, statewide and in metro Albany.
The average price in Georgia tumbled 9 cents over the past week, coming in at $2.473 Monday, the lowest price since March. In southwest Georgia, the average price dropped another 8.5 cents a gallon to $2.393, one of the lowest prices in the state. Nationally, the average price of $2.624 Monday dropped 5 cents a gallon over the week, according to national surveyors AAA-The Auto Club Group and GasBuddy.
Oil prices hit a new low last week, further fueling the plunge at the pump. In Georgia, the lowest average prices among the state’s 15 metro regions Monday were in Dalton ($2.35), Rome ($2.39) and Albany. The state’s highest average prices were in Hinesville-Fort Stewart ($2.63), Brunswick ($2.58) and Savannah ($2.53).
“Georgians can be thankful for strong oil production and supplies, which have set the table for some of the lowest gas prices of the year,” Mark Jenkins, a AAA spokesman, said. “The state average should carve off another 5 cents before Thanksgiving and eventually fall below $2.30 before fully adjusting to recent oil and wholesale gas price declines. However, there is potential for oil prices to rise in December, depending on how markets respond to possible OPEC oil production cuts and sanctions against Iranian oil exports.”
Thanksgiving gas prices in Georgia will remain slightly higher than last year’s holiday. AAA has forecast that nearly 1.6 million Georgians will travel this week for the holiday. Of those, 1.4 million will drive. By Thanksgiving Day, gas prices should average $2.44 a gallon. While that is 7 cents more than last year’s holiday, it’s 2 cents less than the five-year average.
The national average has dropped 24.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 7.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.
