ALBANY — The Albany Herald is again pink today in advance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and as a fundraiser for Horizons Community Solutions.

For the eighth straight year, The Herald is printed on pink paper to call attention to breast cancer awareness, while The Herald’s website is also featuring a pink background today.

The special issue allows advertisers to contribute to the awareness. A portion of advertising revenue from today’s paper will be donated to Horizons, formerly known as the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia, which has been active in the fight against cancer in Southwest Georgia for more than a decade and a half.

Officials with Horizons have said that the annual pink paper prompts an increase in the number of calls the organizations receives from the public about services related to breast cancer.

Phoebe’s Carlton Breast Center is also continuing their promotion of breast cancer awareness by offering free 3-D mammograms in October to the first 100 eligible women who make an appointment.

The 14-county Southwest Public Health District had 45 deaths related to breast cancer in 2016, data available from the Georgia Department of Public Health Office of Health Indicators for Planning shows.

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for this year include 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women, about 63,410 new cases of carcinoma in situ and about 40,610 deaths in women from breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. The ACS’s Cancer Statistics Center notes that breast cancer is expected to impact 7,820 women, and cause 1,320 deaths, among Georgia women this year.
