MACON — Two Southwest Georgia U.S. representatives were among 13 members of the state’s congressional delegation who have been named Friends of Farm Bureau for the 114th Congress by the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Georgia lawmakers receiving the award were U.S. Sens. Johnny Isakson and David Perdue, both Republicans. House members who received the award included U.S. Reps. Sanford Bishop, D-Albany, and Austin Scott, R-Tifton. U.S. Reps. Rick Allen, Buddy Carter, Doug Collins, Tom Graves, Jody Hice, Barry Loudermilk, Tom Price, Lynn Westmoreland and Rob Woodall, all Republicans, also received the award.
AFBF officials say the award is given at the end of each Congress to legislators who have at least a 60 percent voting record in agreement with AFBF priority issues.
Perdue, serving his first term in the U.S. Senate, is a member of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee. Allen and Scott serve on the House Agriculture Committee, where Scott chairs the Subcommittee on Commodity Exchanges, Energy and Credit. Bishop serves on the House Appropriations Subcommittee in Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies. Hice is a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources.
In awarding the Friend of Farm Bureau Award, AFBF officials said they consider the votes legislators cast on legislation pertaining to food security and safety, regulatory reform, technology and trade. The AFBF Board of Directors, on which Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long serves, established these priority issues.
“We’re extremely grateful for the support we receive from our members of Congress, which is essential to the continued success of Georgia farmers” Long said. “These members voted with Farm Bureau’s position on numerous key agricultural issues during the 114th Congress.”
The first recipients of the Friend of Farm Bureau Award were announced in September 1996 and have been announced every other year near the end of subsequent congresses. The 114th Congress, which opened Jan. 3, 1915, closes Jan. 3. Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the state’s largest general farm organization and has 158 county offices.
