Tift Regional Medical Center to host surgical robotic open house
Open house planned for Friday to view technology available at Tift Regional Robotics Center
From Staff Reports
TIFTON — One of the more recent advances in medical technology is surgical robotics. On Friday, Tift Regional Health System is offering an open house opportunity to learn more about the technology.
The Tift Regional Medical Center’s cafeteria will be the site Friday afternoon where visitors may “come and meet the robot” for an open house and reception to learn more about the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System.
From 2 p.m.-4 p.m., individuals will get to try out the robot for themselves. A full-size model is expected to be on display, and Dr. Rana Khalek with Affinity Physicians for Women will be available to answer questions regarding robotic gynecological surgery.
The Robotics Center at Tift Regional promotes the option of robotic surgery as resulting in smaller incisions, less discomfort and quicker recovery. For surgeons, the benefits are said to be improved precision, enhanced visualization and a higher quality of functional design.
The center says that small incisions, measuring up to two centimeters, are used to incorporate miniaturized wristed instruments and a high-definition 3D camera, while the surgeon is able to view a magnified, high-resolution image of the surgical site.
The technology scales, filters and translates the surgeon’s hand motions into movements of the da Vinci instruments.
For gynecological patients, the surgery is offered to those with conditions including cervical cancer, uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding when other treatment options fail. The traditional surgery option has been a large incision to the abdomen, which can result in significant pain and extended recovery time.
Aside from Khalek, Drs. Bridgett Asbury and Sandra Brickman — both of Tifton Women’s Center — also perform procedures in the Tifton area with the technology, the center says.
Free refreshments and door prizes are set to be available at the open house. Tift Regional is located at 901 E. 18th St. in Tifton.
