ALBANY — The Georgia State Patrol has released the initial details of a fatal car crash on Monday in which a Dougherty County second-grade student was killed.
The wreck occurred around 7 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Georgia Highway 520 and Bill Whitaker Road in Terrell county. A Chevrolet Uplander, driven by Jessica Renee Moore, 72, of Albany, was traveling east on Georgia Highway 520 when the vehicle swerved off the road and into the median, the GSP report said.
Troopers reported that the driver over-corrected and the vehicle rotated counter-clockwise across the south shoulder and into the lanes for westbound traffic. The Chevrolet then struck a 2006 Ford Econoline van on its rear left side as it was overturning, reports state.
Moore was injured in the accident and transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Passenger Jamaree Lewis, 8, was ejected and fatally injured.
Eric James Uneless, 35, of Valdosta, was driving the van and was uninjured.
According to J.D. Sumner of the Dougherty County School System, Jamaree attended Sherwood Acres Elementary School, where he was in the second grade.
“Letters have been sent to the parents of Lewis’ classmates explaining what happened and our crisis team is available for counseling,” Sumner said.
According to officials, charges are pending the completion of an investigation by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
