ALBANY — The Albany Police Department has released more details surrounding the Saturday shooting of 21-year-old John Lewis Jr.
APD is still investigating the circumstances of the shooting that took place Saturday afternoon. APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said Sunday morning that the shooting occurred at 1:37 p.m. at Dervan Street and South Jackson Street.
According to reports, officers arrived at 1939 South Jackson and observed a gray Nissan Frontier with an Alabama tag lodged between three large trees. The officer on the scene reported seeing three black males running from the rear of the building headed northbound across West Oakridge Drive.
Reports indicate that Lewis was found in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the head, and the responding officer attempted to put pressure on the wound until EMS arrived. Lewis was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after the incident, where he is still listed in critical condition.
According to APD, a search of surrounding hospitals has been made to determine if there are any other victims, but the results of that search have been negative.
Banks said the APD Robbery and Homicide and Crime Scene units are conducting an investigation into the shooting, and no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to call Albany Area Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS (8477) or the APD at (229) 431-2100.
