ALBANY — Independence Day festivities in Albany kick off this weekend and continue through Tuesday with downtown concerts and fireworks.

Food, fun and fireworks are on the agenda as officials prepare for the Fourth of July. A holiday kickoff block party is scheduled for Sunday evening on Front Street at Riverfront Park from 6-10 p.m.

“There will be food, bounce houses, games, entertainment and fun for all ages,” City Public Information Officer Monique Broughton Knight said at a recent news conference.

Also on Sunday night, the movie “Storks” will be shown on a big screen at Riverfront Park starting at 8:30 p.m., or at sunset. Released in 2016, “Storks” is a PG-rated animated film written and directed by Nicholas Stroller about a flock of storks that has moved on from delivering babies to delivering packages.

On Tuesday, the downtown riverfront will again be the center of activity with food, family fun, music and the finale fireworks display. That day’s events will run from 5-10 p.m. and be hosted by Albany native Josh Hunter, also known as “JChosen,” a Top 20 contestant on the TV singing competition “The Voice.”

Merchandise vendors will be on hand, and family-friendly activities — including games and bouncy houses — are planned. Concerts begin at 5 p.m. with appearances from DJ Planet X, G&S Experience, JChosen, R&B singer Ro James and headliner Aubrie Sellers, a country music singer/songwriter.

“The last concert will start around 8:30 p.m. and will lead right into the fireworks,” Knight said.

Those watching the fireworks will see a 30-minute display originating from the Broad Avenue bridge. Officials are encouraging those who attend to leave their own fireworks at home.

Public safety officials said those attending the city celebration should park across the street at the Albany Civic Center on West Oglethorpe Boulevard, which can accommodate parking for 2,500 cars. Those attending are also encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and coolers.

The celebration is free and open to the public. City officials said that, in the event of inclement weather on Sunday, the festivities will be canceled and rescheduled for a later date.

Officials said Friday a contingency plan is still in progress for Tuesday.

Law enforcement officials reminded revelers that the event is alcohol-free, and extra officers will be on duty to enforce that policy and ensure the safety of all who attend.

Those interested in downtown Albany attractions can also visit the Flint RiverQuarium, which is partnering with the Wetherbee Planetarium at Thronateeska Heritage Center to offer specially priced joint tickets.
