ALBANY — Calvin Louis Brown Jr., 24, was charged with murder Tuesday in connection with the Sept. 25 shooting death of Kenneth Dewan Washington, 31, police officials say.

Officers of the Albany Police Department, responding to reports of a “man down,” discovered Washington lying face down in an alley near the 700 block of West Roosevelt Avenue, police officials said.

According to police, while investigators suspected Washington died from a gunshot wound to the head, they relied on initial autopsy reports before issuing a statement to that effect.

“The victim apparently wore a lot of thick dreadlocks,” said Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards, “which made it difficult at first to determine if it was a bullet wound or if he were struck in the head with something. The autopsy confirmed it was a bullet wound.”

Brown has been charged with murder, probation violation, parole violation, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence-felony, jail officials say, and is held without bond at the Dougherty County Jail.
