ALBANY — Morehouse visited the Albany State Monday night and spoiled the Rams’ Senior Night with a last second 75-73 win at the HPER Gymnasium.
Larry Bullock, who has came up big for the Rams all year, drew a shooting foul with 6.7 seconds left. He knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 73. A put back from Robert Askew spoiled the night with three-tenths of a second left.
Head coach Michael Moore said his team played well but the loss was indicative of the issues they’ve been having all season with taller, athletic teams.
“We shot it well in the first half around the perimeter, did an excellent job of executing the offense, we made the extra pass,” Moore said. “But it’s just typical of what happened to us the whole season. Length bothered us. We tried to pound it inside, but them bigs altered some shots.”
It was Bullock who scored the game’s first basket and Darshtyn Baker followed with a 3-pointer. Chris Wheeler knocked down a jumper and the Rams had a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game.
The Rams were on fire in the first half, finishing with 60 percent shooting and 12 assists. Unlike many of their home games, the Rams not only got hot but were able to build and hold a lead at the half. After being up as much as 10 points, ASU went into the halftime break leading 43-36.
Things slowed down for ASU in the second. Bullock knocked down a three a few seconds in, but the Rams would go on a scoring drought which allowed the Tigers to get the lead down to one with 16:05 left. Bullock knocked down another three to give the Rams a four-point cushion. Earl Farnum’s three-point play with 11:39 left stretched the lead to six.
Morehouse’s Darius Walker converted a lay up that cut the lead back to one with 9:25 left, then Askew took it to the basket and drew a foul. His 3-point play gave the Tigers a 65-64 lead, their first of the game, with 8:54 left.
Chris Wheeler’s two free throws tied the game back up and Farnum’s putback slam gave ASU the lead with 7:52 left.
Michael Scott gave Morehouse the lead with a long 3-pointer and the Tigers went on to get their 12th SIAC win
Bullock finished with a team-high 20 points. No other Ram finished in double digits. Albany State ends the regular season 9-16 overall and 6-13 in the SIAC.
They’ll now gear up for the SIAC Tournament.
