PREP NOTEBOOK: GHSA baseball playoffs open Friday

The first round of the Georgia High School Association’s state baseball playoffs begins on Friday with a handful of Southwest Georgia teams in action.

In Region 1-AAAAA, Lee County will travel to Waycross to tackle Region 3-AAAAA champion Ware County in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

Region 1-AAAA champion Crisp County will play host to South Effingham in a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m., No. 2 seed Worth County will play host to Statesboro in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m., while fourth-seeded Westover will travel to Region 3-AAAA champion Wayne County.

The GHSA hasn’t released the Class A brackets yet, but Miller County and Baconton Charter will certainly be among the 16 teams selected to the tournament, while Seminole County and Terrell County are sitting on the fence based on the recent Class A power rankings.

SOUTHLAND ATHLETES EXCEL: Southland Academy posted a strong showing at the GISA state track & field meet this weekend at Hugh Mills Stadium.
